Urbino's role as a cultural capital of Humanism continues today through its famous university, which has eleven Faculties, offering a wide array of Degree Courses.
Over the centuries, the State of Urbino was formed through the annexing of "Lands", each one with its own capital. At the time of their annexing to Urbino, towns such as Gubbio, Urbania, Fossombrone, Cagli, San Leo, Senigallia, Mondavio, Pesaro and many others all brought a rich "dowry" of monuments, which often dated back to the prehistoric and mediaeval periods. The Dukes of Urbino allowed them to maintain a certain autonomy, creating a form of federalism before the term was even invented, as well as enriching them with the many monuments that give all of the different towns an extraordinarily homogeneous architectural style, although every individual solution maintains a certain originality.
